    Smoky Lake County, Agricultural Services Department has an employment opportunity for the position of Weed Inspector which consists of temporary-full-time work for approximately four months, starting May 5, 2025. The successful candidate must be willing to work flexible hours and preference will be given to students or individuals with a pesticide applicator license or the ability to obtain one, prior experience in agriculture, pesticides, spray operations and weed and plant identification. Smoky Lake County will provide all applicable training.

    DUTIES INCLUDE:

    ·         Weed inspections on private land;

    ·         Roadside and spot spraying of weeds;

    ·         Working with producers to control noxious weeds;

    ·         Insect and crop disease surveys;

    ·         General maintenance and equipment upkeep.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND KNOWLEDGE:

    ·         Valid Alberta driver’s license;

    ·         Pesticide Applicators License or Authorized Assistant Applicator License

    ·         Weed species identification;

    ·         Modern agricultural production practices; and

    ·         Any applicable experience and training.

    Wage will be based on qualifications and experience.

    Position Summary

    Position Requirements

    Position Summary

    The typical minimum level of education to perform this job competently is completion of high school.  This position generally requires a minimum of 1-3 years’ experience and continuous learning.  An equivalent combination of related experience and education may be considered.

    Core Accountabilities

    Operate heavy mowing equipment in a safe, efficient, and effective manner as assigned, to include but not limited to:                

    • Perform daily pre- and post-operation equipment checks.
    • Ability to change mower blades and grease all equipment.
    • Ensuring equipment is in proper operating condition.
    • Identifying and reporting equipment deficiencies.
    • Logging and reporting hours on roads and Municipal Reserves.
    • Ensure efficient completion of daily work assignments.

    Position Summary

    Core Accountabilities

    • Operate county spray equipment including one- or two-ton spray trucks, ATV/UTV sprayers, and backpack sprayer.  Ensure the application of herbicide or removal by manual equipment.
    • Maintain detailed records and logs on all control operations as required by Alberta Environment.
    • Maintain assigned County vehicles and equipment ensuring cleanliness and identification of any deficiencies to the Agricultural Services Officers or Manager.
    • Inspect and identify noxious and prohibited noxious weed species throughout the County.  Determine and implement weed control measures.
    • Provide information and advice to County residents in relation to weed inspection services and the need to control restricted and or noxious weeds.
    • Perform general inspection programs for agricultural pests as assigned.
    • Liaise with other municipal lands staff to determine progress, establish work plans and communicate land issues identified through daily operations.

    The County of Vermilion River is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our safety-oriented team as the Agriculture Services Supervisor based in Kitscoty, Alberta. Reporting to the Agriculture Fieldman the Agriculture Services Supervisor assists with programs in the agricultural and environment department.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Plan, prioritize, implement, and ensure compliance with Provincial and Federal Legislation related to vegetation management, weed and pest control.
    • Assist with the development of programs, policies, and procedures in consultation with Management, and the Agricultural Service Board (ASB), on all aspects of Agricultural Services.
    • Coordinate orientation, hiring, coaching, evaluation, supervision and facilitate training of the Vegetation Management Technician and Vegetation Management Applicators.
    • Manage Agriculture and Environment Department equipment, including maintenance, equipment calibration and ensuring safety requirements of vehicles and trailers.
    • Assist with the development and implementation of an integrated vegetation management program including pesticide application, mowing.
    • Maintain No Spray Zone and Roadside Haying Agreement records, educate applicants on requirements and inspect for compliance.
    • Implement the weed inspection program for County of Vermilion River properties and private properties following legislation.
    • Manage the Rat Control Program.
    • Assist with various pest and disease control program to ensure all work and enforcement is done according to Provincial Act, Municipal Policy, and service levels.
    • Carry out departmental responsibilities in the absence of the Agriculture Fieldman, including staff supervision, program implementation, public relations, and other duties as required.
    • Develop programs, demonstrations, meetings, workshops, and awareness information for ratepayers as prescribed by the Agriculture Fieldman.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • 2 years of related experience in a vegetation management environment. Experience supervising field staff preferred.
    • Industrial, Agriculture, and Landscape Alberta Pesticide Applicator License. Exterior Rodent preferred.
    • Post-secondary diploma in Agricultural Science or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
    • Demonstrated strong organizational, time management, coordinating, and prioritizing skills, and the ability to handle many tasks concurrently.
    • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
    • Knowledge of GIS and GPS technology.
    • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
    • Ability to do manual labor, work outdoors in all weather conditions and lift 50 lbs.

    High Prairie Public Works Shop

    Reporting to the Executive Director of Public Works, the Agricultural Services Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing the Agricultural Services Department, which includes programs such as Vegetation Management, Pest Control, Soil Conservation, Extension Activities and more. In accordance with the ASB Act, this position fulfills the duties of the municipality’s appointed Agricultural Fieldman. Key responsibilities include supervising staff, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing departmental budgets, and supporting the Agricultural Service Board (ASB) in policy development and advisory functions.

    Key Duties & Responsibilities:

    Supervisory:

    ·    Supervises the Assistant Agricultural Fieldman while supporting them as they oversee and supervise the seasonal staff, including Weed/Pest Inspectors, Sprayer Applicators, Roadside Mower Operators, and contractors.

    ·   Provides training, performance reviews, coaching, and participates in disciplinary actions as needed.

    Operational:

    • Provide oversight to field operations for Agriculture Services to ensure compliance with all delegated and relevant Provincial legislation (Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act, Soil Conservation Act, Animal Health Act), regulations, permits, approvals, and with County bylaws, policies, and procedures.
    • Conduct inspections for agricultural pests, weeds, and soil conservation.
    • Maintain a Certified Pesticide Applicator license to assist with vegetation management program.
    • Oversees the department's budget and manages all contracted work, including contractors hired for County projects and those engaged through Intermunicipal Collaboration Frameworks, where the County is contracted by the province or other municipalities to perform work on their behalf.
    • Coordinate public meetings and provide information about agricultural programs.
    • Assist landowners with agronomic practices and decisions.

    Legislative:

    ·   Stay current on provincial legislation and industry changes.

    ·   Support the ASB with policy-setting, advising Council on agricultural issues, and promoting programs for agricultural sustainability.

    Administrative:

    ·   Draft reports, agendas, and correspondence for the Executive Director.

    • Work collaboratively with local agricultural research organizations—including SARDA, PCBFA, and the Lesser Slave Watershed Council on programs and projects of mutual agreement.
    • Oversee the agricultural equipment rental program and maintain records.
    • Manage funding applications, tenders, and collaborate with local agricultural organizations.

    Additional Duties:

    • May be required to train for and participate in any emergency response declared by the County.
    • Provide advice and support to other departments on agricultural matters.

    Education & Experience:

    • Post-secondary education in Agriculture, Environmental Science, or a combination of equivalent education and experience is required.

    ·   3-5 years of experience in Agricultural Services, with supervisory experience.

    • Pesticide Applicators Certificate (Agriculture, Industrial, and Landscape classes) preferred.
    • Predator Control Device Permit (Form 7) an asset.
    • Member in good standing with AAAF or the ability to qualify.

    ·     Valid Class 5 driver’s license and clean driver’s abstract.

    ·     First Aid certification is an asset.

    ·     Criminal Record Check required.

    Knowledge, Skills & Attributes:

    ·     Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

    ·     Strong verbal and written communication skills.

    • Ability to interact and respond to inquiries from ASB, Management, Employees, and Ratepayers.

    ·     Basic accounting and budget management skills.

    ·    Ability to work independently and maintain confidentiality.

    ·    Knowledge of pesticide application, weed/crop identification, and mechanically inclined.

    ·    Working knowledge with GPS and GIS systems.

    Health & Safety:

    ·     Follow county health and safety policies and procedures

    • Must follow all safe job procedures.

    ·   Use appropriate PPE and adhere to safety regulations.

    Working Conditions:

    ·    Outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions (hot, cold, wet).

    ·   Use of trucks, ATVs, and pesticide equipment.

    • Physical job requirements:  May require lifting and carrying of up to 23 kg, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling.

    High Prairie Public Works Shop – Agriculture Department
    Seasonal (June – September 2025)


    The Seasonal Mower will be responsible for conducting roadside mowing across the County using a John Deere 6100 series tractors with a 15' mower deck. This role also involves maintaining equipment and performing other related duties to ensure efficient operation throughout the mowing season. The positions run from approximately June to September 2025 (depending on seasonal conditions and workload).

    Education & Experience

    ·    Valid Alberta Class 5 Operator’s License.

    ·   Provide current drivers abstract.

    ·   Minimum grade 12 diploma.

    ·    Experience operating and maintaining equipment.

    Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

    ·    Mechanically inclined, able to troubleshoot.

    ·   Maintain and service equipment.

    ·   Map reading skills and working knowledge of Geographical Positioning System (GPS) & Geographic Information System (GIS) – Asset

    ·   Must be self-motivated, and able to work with minimal supervision.

    ·   Good physical condition.

    ·   Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    • The ability to deal with the public effectively and courteously is required.

    Working Conditions & Physical Environment
    • Use and operation of heavy equipment and attachments throughout the County.
    •  Physical job requirements:  May require lifting and carrying of up to 23 kg, bending, twisting, kneeling, squatting, crawling.
    •  Dust and fumes.
    • Exposure to outdoor conditions.
    • Normal work week is 40 hours, but occasional overtime may be required. A full work week is not always guaranteed if weather conditions make it difficult or unsafe to work. On such days, other duties may be available, but they are not guaranteed.
