In this role, you are the Operational Lead for the department. While the Agricultural Fieldman sets the strategy

and policy, you are responsible for day-to-day operations and field execution. You will act as the "boots on

the ground" supervisor, ensuring that our programs are delivered safely, effectively, and on schedule.

Smoky Lake County is characterized by diverse and robust industry sectors, including thriving agriculture, oil

and gas, forestry, aggregate, and tourism. Our core focus is a steadfast commitment to public service,

fostering educational opportunities, and enhancing recreational facilities. We are looking for a dedicated team

player to join our Agricultural Services Department.

What You Will Do

  • Lead Operations: Serve as the Lead Operator for the municipal spray program. You will coordinate the

daily logistics, equipment calibration, and execution of vegetation control.

  • Supervise Staff: Directly supervise, mentor, and schedule our seasonal weed inspectors. You will

provide day-to-day direction and enforce safety practices in the field.

  • Field Enforcement: Act as a designated Inspector under the Weed Control Act and Agricultural Pests

Act. You will handle operational enforcement (such as issuing notices) and resolve routine compliance

issues professionally.

  • Producer Engagement: Serve as a front-line contact for ratepayers, providing technical advice and

resolving concerns.

  • Extension & Producer Support: Coordinate agricultural extension events, including booking venues

and securing speakers. You will also work directly with producers to assist with grant applications and

program funding documentation

  • Department Support: Assist with the implementation of ASB business plans, policy creation, and step

in as the Acting Agricultural Fieldman when delegated.

We are looking for a motivated individual who is adaptable and eager to support the team.

  • Team-Oriented: You possess a strong work ethic, believing that no task is too small. Your focus is

always on successful completion of the job and supporting the team, whether you are leading a crew

or operating spray equipment.

  • Willing to Learn: You are open to training and eager to expand your technical knowledge of municipal

agriculture.

  • Conflict Resolution: You work with community members and the team calmly and respectfully.
  • Reliable: You are prepared for seasonal workload fluctuations and early starts (5:00 AM) during the

busy summer season.

Qualifications

  • Education: A Diploma or Degree in Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Natural Sciences, or a related

field is required.

  • Licensing:

o Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.

o Valid Pesticide Applicator License OR the willingness to obtain one.

  • Experience: We are open to candidates with varying levels of experience, provided they have a strong mechanical aptitude and leadership potential
  • Assets: A Blasting Certificate is considered an asset.
