    The Municipal District of Bighorn No. 8 is a rural municipality located in a beautiful natural setting.     Reporting to the Agriculture, Environment, and Parks Supervisor, this position supports the coordination and delivery of municipal agricultural and environmental programs, including responsibilities under the Agricultural Service Board Act, Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act, and Soil Conservation Act. The role also provides assistance with the MD’s parks‑related operations and maintenance. 

    Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Flexibility required. Salary: Starting at $ 87,174.81

    The MD of Willow Creek is hiring a Vegetation Management Technician for a seasonal full-time position from approximately April 27th to September 25th (arrangements can be made for student applicants). The Vegetation Management Technician performs herbicide applications using various spray equipment, as well as other landscape management activities within the MD of Willow Creek. The role will include vegetative identification of both invasive and native species, as well as maintaining accurate records of those identifications and subsequent herbicide applications. Due to the nature of the task, early morning starts will be required.

    This is a safety sensitive position as it applies herbicide and operates applicable and various equipment on municipal worksites, public, and private lands.

    Specific Duties and Accountabilities:

    • Produce detailed and accurate herbicide application records;

    • Operate and maintain spray equipment on public and private lands/road-sides;

    • Applying herbicide in a manner that is compliant with all applicable provincial legislation;

    • Operate and maintain seeding equipment on public and private lands/road-sides;

    • Operate and maintain various MD vehicles/equipment, including regular cleaning as required;

    • Planting trees and shrubs as required;

    • Carry/operate backpack sprayers, hand-pick and bag plants, facilitate the placement of biocontrols;

    • Participate in health and safety program;

    • Adhere to all of the MD of Willow Creek policies, bylaws, procedures and processes, as well as align work to the MD of Willow Creek strategic plan and values

    • Act as a municipal inspector under the Alberta Weed Control Act;

    • Act as a municipal inspector under the Alberta Agricultural Pest Act;

    • Assist with invasive species inspection, as well as provincial surveys as required;

    • Assist with rental equipment delivery, maintenance and minor repairs;

    • All other duties deemed necessary and appropriate by the Agricultural Fieldman, and/or his/her designate.

    Qualifications:

    • Valid Non-GDL Class 5 Alberta Operators License;

    • Familiarity with the Alberta Township System (ATS) an asset

    • Willingness to use/learn mapping software on handheld devices (Fieldmaps), or in spray equipment (MRF) for the purpose of detailed and accurate record-keeping; o Experience with GPS/GIS products considered an asset;

    • Experience towing trailers and loading equipment onto trailers in a safe manner;

    • Experience in the safe operation of ATV/UTV’s an asset;

    • Current/completed education in a related field (i.e. agriculture, environmental, biology, etc.), o Agricultural background is considered a valuable asset;

    • Hold an Alberta Pesticide Applicator Certification (Landscape, Industrial, Agricultural), or have ability to obtain an Alberta Authorized Assistant Applicators License;

    • Strong plant (invasive/native) identification skills;

    • Strong mechanical aptitude – experience using various tools;

    • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with supervisor, co-workers, and the public;

    • Willingness to work in both a team and independent environment, when required;

    • Able to follow instructions as given, and prioritize tasks;

    • Must be capable of lifting 25kg (~50lbs) safely;

    • Willingness to perform outdoor work in all weather conditions.

    Lamont County is seeking enthusiastic and highly motivated individuals to join our team. The Weed Inspector position offers exciting hands-on experience in the Agriculture and Environmental industry. This position offers a blend of fieldwork and record keeping to provide our ratepayers with weed control identification and support. This position allows you to assist in managing an integrated pest management program and provides exposure to practical agriculture and environmental fieldwork.

    We are looking for two Weed Inspectors with our Agriculture Services Board (ASB). Term: May 4 to August 28, 2026, with possible extension.

    JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Assists the Weed Inspection Program by identifying invasive weed species, conducting field inspections, creating detailed reports and recording sites with GIS programming as required by the Weed Control Act.

    • Communicate and assist landowners with weed identification and their weed control responsibilities.

    • Assist in the vegetation management program through Integrated Pest Management on Lamont County Properties

    • Assists with annual crop pest surveillance program, including insect and crop diseases.

    • Assists in the Clubroot Management Program.

    • Follow Lamont County Safety policies.

    • Other duties as required.

    QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

    • Currently a student or recent graduate of an Environmental or Agricultural Sciences related program.

    • Possesses excellent communication skills and is safety orientated.

    • Holds a Class 5 Alberta Drivers’ License.

    • Able to work effectively independently and as part of a team.

    • Provides reliable transportation to work.

    • Able to lift 50lbs, sit for long durations, and perform other duties in various conditions.

    • Familiarity with weed species identification, crop pest identification, an agricultural background, word processing, spreadsheet, and GIS computer software would be considered an asset.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    • A satisfactory and valid Driver’s Abstract.

    • A satisfactory Criminal Record Check.

    • A negative drug screen.

    This position is based on a 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Lamont County offers a competitive wage based on experience and qualifications. Training in weed identification, herbicide stewardship, and Authorized Assistant training may be provided.

    We are currently looking for 3 General Agricultural Labourer’s with the board. Duties will include but are not limited to the following:

    • Tree planting
    • Grass seeding
    • Shelterbelt pest control
    • Weed and brush inspection and herbicide application
    • Invasive species management
    • Conducting pest survey’s
    • Rental equipment transportation and set up within Starland County.

    The successful candidates will possess a valid class 5 licence and have experience operating a 1 ton truck &utility/flat bed trailer, be able or willing to learn to operate equipment such as a 60hp tractor, ATV’s & UTVs, and have a working knowledge of weeds and responsible herbicide and pesticide use. Must be able to lift 23 kg. Consideration will be given to candidates who are currently enrolled in agricultural related training and to those with a valid pesticide applicator licence or willing to obtain required certifications/licences. Employment will commence on or near May 1st and end approximately August 31st, 2026.

    Employees are responsible for full cooperation with all aspects of the health and safety program, including compliance with all rules and regulations, and for continually practicing safety while performing their duties. Starland County has a Substance Abuse Prevention Policy in place as a reflection of our commitment to protect the health and safety of employees, co-workers, the general public and the environment. In accordance with this policy, Pre-Employment drug and alcohol testing is required prior to commencing employment as well as a drivers abstract to be pulled.
