Summary:
The Agriculture, Environment and Parks Assistant provides assistance with the coordination and delivery of the municipal agricultural and environmental programs which includes the duties required under the Agricultural Service Board Act, Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act and Soil Conservation Act.  This position also assists with the MD’s Parks related operations and maintenance.

Hours of Work:  
Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Flexibility required. 

Salary:
Starting at $93,830.40

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Carry out weed inspections on private, public and municipal owned land.  Issue letters to residents and provide enforcement when necessary.  Maintain weed control records and complete reports.
  • Appointed as an inspector under the Weed Control Act and Agricultural Pest Act.
  • Apply herbicide on roadsides and municipal owned property to control invasive plants using equipment such as backpack sprayers, quad sprayer, roadside sprayers, and hose reel sprayers.
  • Prepare educational publications, newsletters, and materials.
  • Organize and present at education workshops and seminars either individually or in collaboration with other partners and organizations.
  • Consult and provide information to residents regarding weeds, pests, trees, pasture management, grass seeding and horticultural issues.
  • Research and stay informed on current environmental and agricultural concerns, programs, and best practices.
  • Perform year-round parks tasks during the absence of the Parks Workers.
  • Assist workers as needed and perform as Acting Supervisor in absence of the Agriculture, Environment and Parks Supervisor.
  • Perform landscaping tasks that include maintaining flower beds, seeding, and weed pulling.
  • Maintain and repair fleet equipment and small tools.
  • Conduct pest surveys and write reports.
  • Provide small rodent and pest control support.
  • Respond to public inquiries and complaints.
  • Follow applicable corporate guidelines, policies, procedures, and Health and Safety Program.
  • Perform other assigned duties.

Qualifications:

  • Related post-secondary degree or technical diploma or combination of post secondary education and equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of the Weed Control, Agricultural Service Board, Agricultural Pests and Soil Conservation Acts.
  • Experience with herbicide application and possession of a valid Pesticide Applicators License is preferred however training can be provided to obtain a license once hired.
  • Currently possesses or is able to obtain Certificate of Qualification as an Agricultural Fieldman through the Association of Alberta Agricultural Fieldmen.
  • Experience operating and maintaining small equipment such as quads, sprayers, and mowers.
  • Knowledgeable in native and invasive plant identification.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Competency using computer applications and GPS devices.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including early mornings and some evening and weekends.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s license or better.
  • Clean Driver’s Abstract and negative Criminal Record check.
