The County of Vermilion River is seeking two (2) highly motivated individuals to join our safety oriented team as Weed and Pest Inspectors. Join our Agriculture team for the summer and be part of a fun and energetic team focused on improving agriculture sustainability! The Weed & Pest Inspectors will assist in managing an integrated pest management program through inspections, education, and control. This position is based out of Kitscoty, Alberta.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS
- Background or education in agriculture, environmental sciences, or pest management.
• Ability to identify wide range of weeds and crops.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with the public and coworkers.
- Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather, and capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 (fifty) lbs.
- Reliable and safety-minded, with the ability to follow directions, work independently, and maintain accurate daily records.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with an acceptable driving record.
- Eligible to obtain or currently hold an Alberta Pesticide Authorized Assistant Certificate.
- Willingness to operate trucks in a safe and responsible manner.
- Strong attention to detail for conducting inspections, documenting findings, and maintaining accurate records. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct field inspections of vegetation, including identification and mapping of prohibited and noxious weeds, and maintain accurate records using GIS or other tracking systems.
- Assist in applying herbicides safely and effectively to control invasive and undesirable vegetation, following all label directions and safety protocols.
• Educate and support landowners on weed identification, control responsibilities, and compliance with applicable regulations.
- Participate in annual crop and pest surveillance, including rat inspections, clubroot inspections, Bertha armyworm survey, and grasshopper surveys.
- Support agriculture and environmental programs, including agriculture plastic recycling initiatives, ALUS participation, biocontrol projects, and educational outreach.
- Operate vehicles and field equipment safely while conducting fieldwork and inspections.
- Maintain daily records and documentation of inspections, treatments, and program activities.
- Contribute to team training and meetings to stay updated on best practices, safety protocols, and regulatory changes.
This position will tentatively start on May 4, 2026, and conclude on August 28, 2026. A competitive wage is available. Training in weed ID, herbicide stewardship and Authorized Assistant training may be provided. The successful candidates will be required to provide a criminal record check and drivers abstract.
