Vegetation Management Applicator (seasonal) - County of Vermilion River

The County of Vermilion River is seeking two (2) highly motivated individuals to join our safety oriented team as Vegetation Management Applicators. Join our Agriculture team for the summer and be part of a fun and energetic team focused on improving agriculture sustainability! This position will help with vegetation management through inspections and control as an Alberta Pesticide Authorized Assistant, as well as assist in sustainable agriculture initiatives throughout the County. This position is based out of Kitscoty, Alberta.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Background or education in agriculture, environmental sciences, or vegetation control.
  • Ability to identify wide range of weeds and crops.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with the public and coworkers.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in variable weather, and capable of performing physically demanding tasks, including lifting up to 50 (fifty) lbs.
  • Reliable and safety-minded, with the ability to follow directions, work independently, and maintain accurate daily records.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence with an acceptable driving record.
  • Eligible to obtain or currently holding an Alberta Pesticide Authorized Assistant Certificate.
  • Willingness to operate trucks, and spray equipment in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safe herbicide handling, application, and compliance with regulations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct field inspections of vegetation, including identification and mapping of prohibited and noxious weeds, and maintain accurate records using GIS or other tracking systems.

• Apply herbicides safely and effectively to control invasive and undesirable vegetation, following all label directions and safety protocols.

  • Perform manual and mechanical weed control as needed to support vegetation management objectives.
  • Participate in annual crop and pest surveillance, including rat inspections, clubroot inspections, Bertha armyworm survey, and grasshopper surveys.
  • Support agriculture and environmental programs, including agriculture plastic recycling initiatives, ALUS participation, and biocontrol projects.
  • Operate and maintain vehicles, UTVs, and field equipment safely while conducting fieldwork.
  • Maintain daily records and reports of activities, observations, and treatments applied.
  • Contribute to team training and meetings to stay updated on best practices, safety protocols, and regulatory changes

This position will tentatively start on May 4, 2026 and conclude on August 28, 2026 (these dates are subject to change). A competitive wage is available. The successful candidates will be required to provide a criminal record check and drivers abstract.
