Manager of Agricultural Services - County of Newell

The County of Newell is seeking an energetic and motivated individual to join our team as the Manager of Agricultural Services. This is a permanent, full-time position reporting to the Director of Agricultural Services. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the County’s agricultural, legislative, environmental, and rental programs. You will also serve as a Municipal Inspector under the Weed Control Act, an Officer under the Agricultural Pest Act, and a Soil Conservation Officer under the Soil Conservation Act. This position plays a key role in advancing the goals, values, and overall success of the County of Newell.

Areas of Responsibility:

The Manager will supervise the Environmental Services Supervisor as well as seasonal equipment operators, ensuring that County equipment is used and maintained in accordance with safe operating procedures and schedules. This role will also promote and enhance public awareness of the County’s Agricultural Services programs.

In addition to providing administrative and operational support to the Director of Agricultural Services, the Manager will coordinate work orders, monitor job costing and activities, and ensure compliance with all relevant pesticide regulations as required by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. The Manager will also serve as a resource for agricultural producers, offering guidance on best management practices, applicable regulations, funding opportunities, innovative technologies, and emerging research.

Duties for this position include, but are not limited to: 

  • Manage roadside vegetation mowing, establishment, and service rental programs.
  • Oversee Agricultural Services legislative programming under the Agricultural Services Board Act, Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act, and Soil Conservation Act.
  • Work collaboratively with relevant County departments and supervisors to plan and coordinate equipment and fleet maintenance activities.
  • Complete annual reporting requirements for environmental programs and initiatives.
  • Ensure employee safety and training documentation are accurate, properly maintained, and kept up to date. 
  • Participate in events and planning committees that support goals outlined in environmental funding applications. 
Preference will be given to applicants possessing:
  • A diploma or degree in an agriculture-related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence.
  • A Pesticide Applicator Certificate, or a willingness to obtain one.
  • A valid Intermediate First Aid Certificate, or willingness to obtain one.
