Open Space Summer Student
The Open Space Student supports the Open Space and Agricultural Services department with program delivery and initiatives by assisting with general duties which include (but are not limited to): project management, community engagement, data collection, inspections, reporting and research. This is a full-time summer position working from approximately May 5 to August 29, 2025.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
Project and Inspection Support
Primary Responsibilities (55%):
- Participates in open space asset condition assessments and inspections.
- Assists with the collection of park user data.
- Assists with the development and implementation of an intercept survey at various open space locations.
- Documents and summarizes findings from user and survey data in a final report.
- Assists with educational information or activities for park visitors about the open spaces and projects (e.g., wetlands).
Secondary Responsibilities (35%):
- Assists with project delivery, including site coordination, inspections and design support.
- Conducts warranty inspections and monitoring for completed Capital Projects.
- Observes construction activities to ensure adherence to project plans and safety requirements.
- Maintains and updates project records, and documents project progress.
- Assists with public interface at a project site by responding to questions.
General Responsibilities (10%)
- Assists Open Space staff as required and works collaboratively with others in the organization to ensure the successful completion of all assigned tasks.
- Updates and assists with the development of a year-end report/student manual as required to assist future students with their role.
- Performs other related duties as required by the Supervisor.
- Adheres to all of Sturgeon County’s policies, bylaws, procedures, and processes, as well as aligns work to the Sturgeon County values.
- Adheres to applicable responsibilities and accountabilities as outlined in the Sturgeon County Health and Safety Management System.

Knowledge, Education, Qualifications, Skills, Abilities & Experience
Required:
- Completion of some post-secondary studies in Civil Engineering, Parks and Recreation, or a related field
- Valid class 5 driver’s license with a clean driver’s abstract.
- Basic understanding of project management, traffic monitoring, drainage principles, types of roadside infrastructure and surveying
- Familiar with municipal infrastructure inspection and data collection techniques for various municipal assets as applicable
- Strong organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and reporting skills, and ability to work effectively in both a field and office environment
- Ability to accurately perform work including data collection, inspections and interpretation of plans and technical information as required
Assets:
- Relevant completed engineering coursework related to Transportation Engineering, Construction Management, Water Resources, etc.
- Relevant parks and recreation coursework related to community engagement, parks and recreation management, operations, and landscaping
- Defensive Driving Certificate
- Emergency First Aid Certificate
- Knowledge of municipal infrastructure including inspection methods and construction practices
- Familiarity with GIS and AutoCAD to support data collection and project tasks
- Hands-on experience with inspections and data collection
- Prior experience with municipal infrastructure engineering and project delivery
- Ability to operate a pickup truck on gravel roads and navigate the rural road system considered a strong asset.
- Advanced data analysis and visualization skills
