    Agricultural Inspector

    The temporary full-time (up to 1 weeks - approximately May 4 to August 28, 2026) Agricultural Inspector position conducts inspections and monitors for compliance with the Alberta Weed Control Act, Alberta Agricultural Pest Act and Community Standards Bylaw 1433/19 on both private and public lands within Sturgeon County. 

    This is a safety sensitive position as it applies herbicide and operates applicable and various equipment on County worksites and private land. The positions works Monday to Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

    Key Duties & Responsibilities

    Investigating Concerns and Performing Inspections (85%)

    ·        Administers the Alberta Weed Control Act on public and private property which includes investigating landowner concerns, performing inspections, identifying regulated weeds, preparing correspondences, issuing notices, and arranging for enforcement activities as required.

    ·        Administers the Alberta Agricultural Pest Act on public and private property which includes performing inspections, identifying regulated pests, investigating landowner concerns, preparing correspondences, issuing notices, and arranging for enforcement activities as required. 

    ·        Inspects properties for compliance with the Landscape Standards outlined in Sturgeon County Community Standards Bylaw 1433/19; issue Enforcement Orders and arranges for enforcement activities as required.

    ·        Communicates with landowners, internal departments, and other stakeholders regarding the impacts of weeds and pests, advises on management approaches, and assists in the development of multi-year weed and pest management plans. 

    ·        Utilizes GIS-based software to maintain detailed records of all work activities, including interactions with landowners.

    Other Related Duties (15%)

    ·        Performs vegetation management activities such as mechanical weed control and handpicking.

    ·        Assists with the planning and facilitation of weed and pest-related public education activities.

    ·        Performs other related assigned duties as required.

    Required:

    ·        Enrolled in a post-secondary diploma or degree in a related Agriculture or Science field of study. 

    ·        Valid Class 5 Driver’s license and clear driver’s abstract.

    ·        Authorized Assistant Pesticide Applicator Certification

    ·        Standard First Aid

    ·        H2S Alive of the ability to obtain.

    ·        WHMIS 2015 or the ability to obtain.

    ·        Plant identification including regulated weeds.

    Vegetation Management Labourer II

    Sturgeon County is hiring up to four (4) temporary full-time (approximately 16 weeks, May 4 - August 21, 2026) Vegetation Management Labourer IIs. This position performs vegetation management on Sturgeon County owned land. The activities performed include herbicide application, spring clean-up, trimming/pruning trees, weed trimming and mowing. This position uses GIS-based system to collect and maintain geospatial data relevant to department operations. Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

    This is a safety sensitive position as it operates various equipment on County worksites.

    Key Duties & Responsibilities

    Vegetation Management and Weed Control (50%)

    ·        Operates various types of herbicide application equipment to control weeds and other vegetation on municipal road allowances and other County-owned land. 

    ·        Ensures all herbicide applications are performed in a manner which is compliant with all applicable provincial legislation.

    ·        Properly identifies weeds and other target vegetation.

    ·        Maintains records of all work performed in accordance with the Environmental Code of Practice for Pesticides and with Sturgeon County’s work management systems.

    ·        Performs tree, shrub and perennial pruning, planting, fertilizing, mulching, watering, and removal as required within Sturgeon County parks and boulevards.

    ·        Applies herbicide with handheld application systems for weed and grass control within planting and landscape areas in accordance with all applicable legislation.

    Equipment Maintenance (10%)

    Vegetation Management Technician II

    Key Duties & Responsibilities

    Vegetation Management Operations (70%)

    Mower Operator II

    Sturgeon County is hiring up to five (5) temporary full-time Mower Operators for approximately 18 weeks (May 19 - September 18, 2026). This position operates equipment to control grass and weeds on municipal land and road allowances.

    This is a safety sensitive position as it operates various equipment on County worksites. Hours of work are Monday to Thursday, 7:00 am - 5:30 pm (10 hour days).

    Key Duties & Responsibilities

    Mowing and Herbicide Application Operations (90%) 

    ·        Operates a 150-horsepower tractor and a 15-foot rotary cutter with or without an extension (sidearm) unit with herbicide application technology to mow grass and control weeds on municipal road allowances, and park reserves.

    ·        May be required to operate unit with an extension arm (side arm).

    ·        Applies herbicides in accordance with all applicable legislation.

    ·        Performs other vegetation management and landscape maintenance duties when weather is unsuitable for mowing including mechanical weed and grass trimming, weed hand pulling, landscaping maintenance, and grass seeding.

    The County of Vermilion River is seeking two (2) highly motivated individuals to join our safety oriented team as Weed and Pest Inspectors. Join our Agriculture team for the summer and be part of a fun and energetic team focused on improving agriculture sustainability! The Weed & Pest Inspectors will assist in managing an integrated pest management program through inspections, education, and control. This position is based out of Kitscoty, Alberta.

    KEY QUALIFICATIONS

    • Background or education in agriculture, environmental sciences, or pest management.

    This is a safety sensitive position as it applies herbicide and operates applicable and various equipment on County worksites. Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

    KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


    Vegetation Management Operations (70%) 

    • Operates various types of herbicide application equipment to control weeds and other vegetation on municipal road allowances and other County-owned land. 
    • Calibrates equipment and calculates herbicide mixes in accordance with label-specified rates.
    • Ensures all herbicide applications are performed in a manner which is compliant with all applicable provincial legislation. 
    • Properly identifies weeds and other target vegetation.
    • Maintains records of all work performed in accordance with the Environmental Code of Practice for Pesticides and with Sturgeon County’s work management systems.
    • Assists with the maintenance of vegetation management rental equipment.
    • Performs tree, forest and landscape maintenance on County owned land including, mowing, weed whacking, pruning, planting, fertilizing, seeding, mulching, watering, and hand picking
    • Conducts regulated and nuisance tree and horticultural insect and disease monitoring including Dutch Elm Disease, Elm Bark Beetle, Mountain Pine Beetle, Emerald Ash Borer and Fire Blight. 
    • Conducts tree and forest inventory data collection and condition assessment utilizing GIS-based system.
    • Assists Mower Operator IIs by moving locations, delivering parts in the field, and other tasks.

    Other Landscape, Arboriculture and Vegetation Operations (25%) 

    • Performs other types of vegetation management including manual and mechanical weed management and grass seeding.
    • Performs landscape maintenance tasks including mulch application, and tree and shrub planting watering, and fertilization.
    • Performs tree maintenance task including pruning, watering, fertilizing, disease, and pest monitoring. 
    • Ensures field level hazard assessments are completed prior to work completion as required by task Hazard Assessment.
    • Ensures daily tasks are being properly tracked and recorded in the GIS– based system.
    • Arranges for advance public notification and facilitates communication with residents and the public as applicable for all operational activities.
