Employment Opportunity: Manager of Agricultural Services

We are currently looking for a Manager of Agricultural Services to join the County. The Manager of Agricultural Services is responsible for the overall operations of the Agriculture Department in order to implement and manage sound agricultural programs for the public, as determined by Council and the Agricultural Service Board (ASB) and within the parameters of related federal, provincial and municipal legislation including the Soil Conservation Act, Weed Control Act, Agricultural Pests Act, and the Agricultural Service Board Act.

Technical Competencies & Required Qualifications:

  • University or Community College graduation in Agriculture is desirable
  • Practical knowledge and experience in computer systems for business applications
  • 3 to 5 years of Supervisory or Management experience
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered at the discretion of the hiring committee
  • Holds a valid and current Pesticide Applicators License: Industrial/Agriculture/Landscaping
  • A.A.A.F. (The Association of Alberta Agriculture Fieldmen) membership
  • Familiarity with ALUS Canada
  • Form 7 under Pest Control Act or ability to achieve
  • Possess a valid class 5 Drivers License

Essential Job Functions and Duties:

  • Plans, directs and coordinates the day to day operation of the agriculture department to achieve the department mission and goals. Develops and implements a process for preparation of annual capital and operating budgets for all facilities. Monitors and authorizes spending within the limits of the approved budget
  • Facilitates the development and implementation of sustainable programs and services related to agriculture that will provide a positive public image and desirable quality of life in Brazeau County. Ensures effective and efficient use of resources in the development or programs and services

General Accountabilities:

  • Prepares and presents a monthly report to the Director of Community Services and Council regarding agriculture services, activity and issues. Attends all meetings of Council as required, as well as other Committee meetings as appropriate, to provide information, advice and administrative support on any agricultural matters.
  • Advises the Director of Community Services and Council on strategy and policy with respect to agriculture opportunities. Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with the Agriculture Services Board
  • Must carry out responsibilities in accordance with County Policy, Procedures and By‐Laws; Agriculture Service Board Act; Soil Conservation Act; Weed Control Act; Pest Control Act; Animal Health Act; and any other relevant Provincial and/or Federal Legislation
  • Establishes and maintains a system and procedures to ensure agriculture programs and related equipment and facilities may be accessed and used by the public with optimum effectiveness and efficiency
  • Recruits, develops and evaluates all department staff. Conducts regularly schedule meetings with all department staff to review operations; communicate expectations; advises on policy or procedure changes; and to share information of general interest to the team
  • Maintains a current knowledge of all funding programs that may be available to support agriculture initiatives
  • Responds to public enquiries, media requests for information or complains with regard to department activities, following approved policy and procedure
  • Establishes and maintains positive relationships with Community Organizations, Federal or Provincial government departments and neighboring municipalities with respect to matters of Agricultural interest to the County
  • Ensure compliance of employees to legalities and regulations regarding work practices, i.e. WCB, OH&S, pesticides and explosives
  • Complete application, monitoring for compliance and updating policies and procedures as required under licenses required for operation of Agriculture programs
