    Seasonal Employment Opportunity

    The Municipal District of Ranchland No. 66 seeks qualified individual(s) for a

    Seasonal Weed Inspector position.

    Term: Four months, May through August 2026. Start and end dates are flexible.

    Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, some overtime required.

    Area: Based out of the MD of Ranchland administration building, located in Chain Lakes Provincial Park.

    Servicing the area within the municipality’s borders.

    Wage Range: Competitive wages based on skills and experience.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Reporting to the Assistant Agricultural Fieldman, the Weed Inspectors will assist

    with:

    • Inspection, identification, and management of invasive plant species

    • Operation and maintenance of pesticide application equipment

    • Detailed record keeping, mapping, and data collection

    • Provincial pest surveys

    • Interaction with area residents

    • Conservation related duties

    • General labour as required

    • Other duties as required

    Qualifications:

    • Valid class 5 driver’s license

    • Completion of (or currently enrolled in) a post-secondary Agriculture, Horticulture, Environmental, or

    related certificate or diploma program. An equivalent combination of experience and education will

    be considered.

    • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written skills

    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

    • Comfortable working in a wilderness setting

    • Ability to lift and carry up to 25kg

    • Strong record keeping skills

    • Invasive plant identification skills an asset

    • Experience with ArcGIS an asset

    • Pesticide Applicators License an asset

    • Mechanical ability an asset

    Training in weed identification and herbicide stewardship and application will be provided.

    • Post-secondary agriculture related training or certification considered an asset;

    Working Environment

    • 80% of work duties are conducted outdoors in all weather conditions;

    Ponoka County has temporary, full-time, summer seasonal positions available within the Agricultural Services Department. Ponoka County is seeking hardworking and motivated individuals with great people skills to work as County Weed and Pest Inspectors, Herbicide Applicators and Labourers. Duties include, but are not limited to: Weed, Pest and Brush Inspections, Weed and Brush removal, Weed Control, and Equipment Operation.

    The ideal candidate(s) would have the following:

    • Current enrolment or completion of post-secondary education in Agriculture, Environment or a related field.

    • Knowledge of weed identification and management.

    • Knowledge of the Weed Control Act and Agricultural Pests Act would be an asset.

    • A current and valid Pesticide Applicators Certificate (Agriculture/Industrial/Landscape) or Authorized Assistant would be an asset and may be eligible for a wage bonus.

    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to maintain a service-orientated relationship with the public.

    • A valid class five driver’s license and be able to provide a drivers abstract upon request.

    Agricultural Inspector

    The temporary full-time (up to 1 weeks - approximately May 4 to August 28, 2026) Agricultural Inspector position conducts inspections and monitors for compliance with the Alberta Weed Control Act, Alberta Agricultural Pest Act and Community Standards Bylaw 1433/19 on both private and public lands within Sturgeon County.

    Key Duties & Responsibilities

    Investigating Concerns and Performing Inspections (85%)

    ·        Administers the Alberta Weed Control Act on public and private property which includes investigating landowner concerns, performing inspections, identifying regulated weeds, preparing correspondences, issuing notices, and arranging for enforcement activities as required.

    ·        Administers the Alberta Agricultural Pest Act on public and private property which includes performing inspections, identifying regulated pests, investigating landowner concerns, preparing correspondences, issuing notices, and arranging for enforcement activities as required. 

    ·        Inspects properties for compliance with the Landscape Standards outlined in Sturgeon County Community Standards Bylaw 1433/19; issue Enforcement Orders and arranges for enforcement activities as required.

    ·        Communicates with landowners, internal departments, and other stakeholders regarding the impacts of weeds and pests, advises on management approaches, and assists in the development of multi-year weed and pest management plans. 

    ·        Utilizes GIS-based software to maintain detailed records of all work activities, including interactions with landowners.

    Other Related Duties (15%)

    ·        Performs vegetation management activities such as mechanical weed control and handpicking.

    ·        Assists with the planning and facilitation of weed and pest-related public education activities.

    ·        Performs other related assigned duties as required.

    Vegetation Management Labourer II

    Sturgeon County is hiring up to four (4) temporary full-time (approximately 16 weeks, May 4 - August 21, 2026) Vegetation Management Labourer IIs. This position performs vegetation management on Sturgeon County owned land. The activities performed include herbicide application, spring clean-up, trimming/pruning trees, weed trimming and mowing. This position uses GIS-based system to collect and maintain geospatial data relevant to department operations. Hours of work are Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm.

    This is a safety sensitive position as it operates various equipment on County worksites.

    Key Duties & Responsibilities

    Vegetation Management and Weed Control (50%)

    ·        Operates various types of herbicide application equipment to control weeds and other vegetation on municipal road allowances and other County-owned land. 

    ·        Ensures all herbicide applications are performed in a manner which is compliant with all applicable provincial legislation.

    ·        Properly identifies weeds and other target vegetation.

    ·        Maintains records of all work performed in accordance with the Environmental Code of Practice for Pesticides and with Sturgeon County’s work management systems.

    ·        Performs vegetation management around roadside signs, guardrails and delineators including weed whacking, mowing and herbicide applications.

    ·        Collects and manages waste and compostable material from all maintenance work performed.

    County Facility Groundskeeping and Turf Management (30%)

    ·        Performs grounds keeping activities surrounding County administrative facilities including grass cutting, lawn aeration, raking, weed control, brush clearing, tree pruning, garbage collection, planting, and watering, annual flower maintenance.

    ·        Performs tree, shrub and perennial pruning, planting, fertilizing, mulching, watering, and removal as required within Sturgeon County parks and boulevards.

    ·        Waters trees, shrubs, and perennial beds.

    ·        Applies herbicide with handheld application systems for weed and grass control within planting and landscape areas in accordance with all applicable legislation.

    Equipment Maintenance (10%) 

    ·        Safely operates and maintains required equipment including push and riding lawn mowers, rototillers, tractors, weed trimmers, utility terrain vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, pickup trucks, and power tools.

    ·        Assists Mower Operator IIs by moving locations, delivering parts in the field, and other tasks.

    Other Related Duties (10%)

    ·        Keeps detailed records of work performed, including materials used, weather conditions and locations. 

    ·        Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
