Seasonal Medium Duty Equipment Operator - MD of Spirit River

The Municipal District of Spirit River No. 133 is now accepting applications for Seasonal Medium Duty Equipment Operator Positions.

Medium Equipment Operator - 2 Position

Commencing in May and reporting to the Agricultural Fieldman, the Medium Equipment Operators will be required to operate mow tractors or apply herbicides on municipally-owned lands.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Locating mowing/herbicide application sites on a map
  • Reviewing local land conditions
  • Operating a tractor with mowing equipment or a spray truck equipped with a boom and hangun sprayer.
  • Maintaining mower or herbicide records
  • Cleaning equipment to prevent weed spread or cross contamination of herbicide.
  • Mix and load chemical in a safe manner.
  • Notifying the Agricultural Fieldman of noxious and prohibited noxious weeds and providing the land location.
  • Assessing and documenting areas to be sprayed and determining priorities.
  • Safely loading and mixing water and chemical and transporting to the spray site.
  • Determining and then double-checking that the area is not a “Do Not Spray” zone.
  • Identifying target species while on the move.
  • Monitoring water/chemical use and distance covered.
  • Operating spray equipment; including truck, UTV, ATV, and backpack.
  • Maintaining mowing and/or spray records
  • Chemical spill containment and clean-up.
  • Assisting the Agricultural Fieldman with weed and pest inspections and provincial pest surveys.
  • Picking weeds, as required.
  • Seeding ditches, as required
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license with an acceptable driver’s abstract.  Class 3 preferred.
  • Experience operating farm equipment, tractors, side-arm mowers,3-pt hitch mowers, seeders, skidsteers and other medium-duty equipment.
  • Pesticide applicator (Agriculture, Industrial, Landscape) or Authorized Assistant Certificate an asset.
  • Ability to maintain and perform light repairs on equipment (i.e change oil and lights)
  • Knowledge of regulated weeds an asset
  • Ability to manage time and priorities, and ability to multitask.       
  • Physically fit.
  • Comfortable reading maps.

    These are temporary positions and will commence in May, 2022 and last until September, or as long as the project and weather conditions allow.
